Development of a Discharge Lounge: The Use of E-Mail to Facilitate the Quality Improvement Process

Richard J. Rafoth, M.D.

Providence General Medical Center, Everett, Washington

Case Study Editor's Comments: This case study is presented as an excellent example of a quality im provement effort that was developed and implemented with virtually no staff resistance. The author demon strates the use of creative thinking, critical analysis, and a common sense approach to solve a problem that urgently needed resolution. Rather than study the issue ad infinitum, he wisely recognized the practicality of using a widely available resource to enlist the input and cooperation of all the staff who would need to "buy- in" in order for the proposed resolution to succeed.
