Toward a Definition of Roles for Physicians in Quality AssuranceGraduate Program in Public Administration, Pennsylvania State University at Harrisburg, Middletown, Pennsylvania This paper presents a role analysis of physicians working in the quality assurance field. Although spe cific activities vary from organization to organiza tion, eight roles seem to be generic. Four are defined as leading roles: fact finder, technical specialist, col laborator in problem solving, and alternative identi fier. Four roles are secondary: process specialist, re flector, trainer/educator, and advocate. Examples of role performance are presented. Additional concep tional and empirical research needs are identified.
